Description
The Property
Sitting in a secluded corner of the picturesque village of South Zeal which lies at the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park, is The Old Wesleyan Chapel, a romantic, voluminous building of just under 1700 sq. Ft. This former place of worship is now home to an artist studio with a unique planning status which allows owners to stay overnight for extended periods of time if they wish.
Studio Style
Due to its planning status the property’s rustic interior reflects the nature of its artistic usage. The oversized chapel windows are set into the external walls which stretch to well over 12 feet in height and into the voids, with more roof light windows, capture the amazing North light which fills the studio.
The thick stone walls that envelope the place, coupled with the bare timber floor, add to the tranquillity. It’s a very functional space made up of four large rooms consisting of the primary studio space, studio room with kitchen, a dark room and mezzanine lounge area. There’s also a shower room and WC.
It really is a space that not only immediately connects you with history but also gives you a feel of creativity just being within the four walls.
Historic Notes
The Wesleyan Methodist movement was founded after the split from the Church of England and death of John Wesley in 1791. They went on to create these chapels that can be found across the country residing in quaint villages where they served many purposes during their lifetime. This particular chapel was subsequently extended in the early 1800s to provide a school room. In later years it become a woodwork studio and a village cinema. Then, after laying empty and semi derelict for a period of time, it found a new lease of life as an artist studio.
Out and About
Let’s be honest, the lifestyle around one of the UK’s most exquisite national parks is all about nature, the outdoors and enjoying peace and quiet, but there’s more than enough to satisfy those looking for more active pursuits. Cycling, Hiking and tourist attractions to explore round are all within easy reach. The local village hosts some excellent venues for socialising. Head to the Oxenham Arms and kings Arms for some great gastro pub food and drink.
Getting here is very straight forward, take the M5 and connect with the A30 at Exeter and you’ll arrive in around 30 mins by car.
The best station to arrive at is Exeter st Davids which is around 20 mins from the chapel.
